Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner in order for them to be able to survive. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. But she only stayed in the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting career. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first ever permanent acting job. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
